Motor City Bible Quizzing

August 30, 2007

From 7th grade to 9th grade (1989 to 1992) I was involved with competitive Bible Quizzing. Bible quizzers would memorize a chapter of the New Testament (like 1st Corinthians Chapters 1 and 2, NOT the whole book of 1st Corinthians all at once) word-for-word and then meet for monthly tournaments against other church teams around Michigan.

The above drawing is an artists’ interpretation of one of the “quiz boxes”. Instead of a button you’d hit with your hand (like on game shows), there was a button in each of the chair pads that the quizzers sat on. When all the pads were depressed, the “ready” light would come on. The Quiz-Master would ask a question, and whoever jumped up first’s light would go off, while the rest of the lights were disabled.

My dad’s church, Walkerville Baptist, and Chatham Baptist were the only Canadian teams. At the end of the year there was a big Midwest conference in Indianapolis for the ultimate Bible Quizzing Championship! They combined the church teams from Detroit to make stronger teams, and my last year I got placed on the All-Star Team!

It was me and the 4 best quizzers in the league. Those guys were way beyond me, but I was the best Bible quizzer from the Canadian churches. The only 2 guys I can remember from the dream-team were Pat, the best quizzer in the league, and Calvin, the 2nd best quizzer in the league; he looked Jewish and went to Calvin Baptist Church. I was the sub-in bench-warmer, so I didn’t get much action at the tournament, but we won, and I still have the trophy.

Bedouin Boat Clash

August 29, 2007

Last night Jon and I went to the Bedouin Soundclash cd release show on a boat. It was pretty fun.

I only heard Bedouin for the first time a few months ago. I’d always been led to believe I’d think they suck, but I like them. I dunno. I’ve heard the whole new album and I like what I’ve heard.

Songs From A Room at the Horseshoe

August 28, 2007

My roommates spent Saturday afternoon gluing and assembling cds for their show at the Horseshoe last night.

Here’s them playing their song Set It Off. The sound is pretty distorted, but I couldn’t overlay the regular mp3 because it’s a little slower than they played it live. You still get the idea though.

Walter Schreifels

August 28, 2007

Nathan Stein brought me up to take some pictures of Walter Schreifels (of Gorilla Biscuits, Quicksand, Rival Schools and Walking Concert) at Signal to Noise recording studio last night. He was super nice!

Here’s a little video interview I did with him about his week here in Toronto.

Bingo In the Country with Oligarchy

August 27, 2007

I love this picture because you can see through Danielle’s shirt.

This is a little clip from when we played bingo near the Burfords cottage a few weeks ago.
