New Acquisitions

October 14, 2009

I made myself a new business card today, in the size and shape of real paper money!

My main inspirations are Monopoly, Canadian Tire money and the Canadian $2 bill. I figure fake money is funnier and more memorable than a standard business card.

I picked up my new kitty Maako last night! Other than some gold fish, and a turtle I had for about 6 months when I was 10, this is the first pet I’ve ever owned. Roxy was very curious and excited about having another cat around, but Maako just wanted to be left alone. He’s still hiding downstairs.

I got this drill last night too, for $25 from Craigslist.

This Pringle of Scotland flask arrived in the mail today. I won it on ebay, for only $9 including shipping!

I picked up this full sized Kermit the Frog doll at the St Lawrence Market Antique and Collectables show on Sunday afternoon. Only $8!

I was at Shoppers Drug Mart the other day with Adrienne. The Guitar Magazines look like it’s 1993.

They should be putting Melissa Paternoster on the cover. Pump some fresh blood into those withering veins!

Devils Night 2009

October 13, 2009

I’m getting a new cat tonight. He’s a 5-year old Russian Blue, just like Roxy.

The Bang Bangs are playing with Red Mass, Teenanger and Primitive Hands on Devils Night @ Sneaky Dees!

This is my video from Devils Night, at last years Fucked Up Weekend.

Curse Your Branches

October 7, 2009

I went to Honest Ed’s yesterday morning to buy incense, packing tape, clear recycling bags, dish scrubbers, and light bulbs. My studio smells so good now!

I went to Rotate in the afternoon to buy the new Jay Reatard and David Bazan records. I’m not super into the Jay Reatard record yet, but I like a few of the Bazan songs, especially the song Bearing Witness, which nearly mirrors my thoughts towards losing the religious faith I was raised in, the primary subject of his new record.

I saw Bazan perform as Pedro the Lion in 9 different cities during summer of 2000 when I was traveling around doing a string of 2 month internships in Austin (HM Magazine), Chicago (JPUSA/Grrr Records) and Seattle (Tooth and Nail/Solid State Records), and I spent summer 2002 back in Seattle interning at Tooth and Nail’s in-house recording studio, the Compound with producer/engineer Aaron Sprinkle a few months after he recorded Pedro The Lion – Control there.

Bazan came into the studio a few times while I was there but I was young, perpetually broke and felt like I was from the sticks (I was still living in Windsor the other 10 months of the year) compared to this guy who’d recorded albums I liked so much, extensively toured and was financially stable as a result of both, while working independent of the 5 major record labels, (who at the time were still making shitloads of money and controlled the market).

He was living the life I wanted to live in my fantasies (to be clear, my fantasy was me being me in a similar situation, NOT me wishing I was him and having written his songs). I don’t think I introduced myself, but I did take the labeled picture above!

You can read more about Pedro the Lion on their Wikipedia entry, but in short Dave Bazan was the primary member, and they’re probably the most successful band from the late 90′s alt-christian rock scene to cross over to non-religious audiences without bringing the stigma of being labeled christian with them.

As for Jay, youtube took down my Jay Retard Punch video a couple of months ago because it’s violent, therefore violating their terms of use, despite the fact that it had over 150,000 views and had been featured on MTV, pitchfork, exclaim, VBS.tv, Spike.com, and a ton of other places. Taking down the video does more to hurt my body of work than it protects society from violent imagery, so I’ve reposted it on VIMEO!!

Jesse Harris made this button for me! The logo I placed on Just the Tip fits perfectly on a 1″ button!

Nuit Blanche

October 5, 2009

My dad came up from Windsor for the weekend to help me do house fix-ups so I can start spending more time in front of the computer again. Pictures of that tomorrow.

I went to contest my SECOND $180 bicycle ticket on Friday. $180 for biking through a yellow light where there’s not even an intersection? Fuck that I’m pleading not guilty. I feel raped.

Jeremy Jansen and I went to pick up our new zine Just The Tip after I dealt with the ticket. It was rainy, and traffic was hell, but the zines look rad! Check out his pics and more info about the zine at his site stitchphoto.com. We first met up and committed to doing the project on Sept 5th last 2008 (I only remember the date because of the big party VICE threw that day). Hopefully issue 2 won’t take as long.

It feels good to have it wrapped up, no further production needed! I still have to bind half the Dreamachzines I had printed back in June. My heart is already other places, I wish the binding could just be done!

Borel’s book is out! She had a reading/release party at the Drake Underground on Thursday evening, and a little dinner boozer at her agent Sam’s place on Saturday evening. Adrienne is thanked in the back of the book, and it’s a short list! The food was unusually good, and we all got wasted on wine, and smiled and laughed. You can buy her book at TYPE Books on Queen West if you live in Toronto, Amazon, and I think Chapters and Barnes & Nobles etc.. are all carrying it. It was recently licensed in Germany, but I have no idea when that’s coming out.

I had a gig at 6:30 on Sunday taking down a Nuit Blanche installation. All I knew was it was a 4-hour call and it was at the Church of the Holy Trinity west of the Eaton Center and to bring a hard hat and wear steel toes. It turned out to be 6 dreamachines with cushions around them, a low frequency hum as the soundtrack, and a giant banner with a William S Burroughs quote, “Destroy The Word”, which immediately made me think of the New Testament verse, John 1:1 – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The job took less than an hour.

Michelle Williams is my new 2-days-a-week work buddy. She comes over with her laptop and we surf the internet, email people, strategize ways to get things done, organize shit, and make money! Her work email address is michelle@159manning.com and her blog is called michelleremembers.com. (It’s a reference to the book “Michelle Remembers”. shhhh)

Horror Logo

October 1, 2009

I made a new horror/occult themed logo for this here blog.

Tomorrow is supposed to be my last show with the Bang Bangs, but we just got offered a Devils Night slot on the Fucked Up Weekend at Sneaky Dees with Red Mass and some other band, which sounds like a great show, so I think I’m going to have to keep playing.
