Context of the State of the Nation

July 12, 2009

Here’s where my studio is at these days.

I recently got these paintings from my dads garage, they’re called “4 OJ Simpson Heads”. They were my final art project for OAC (Grade 13) in 1997. We were supposed to pick a mentor for our art that semester so I chose Andy Warhol and painted these 4 OJ Simpsons. I think the only one that looks like him at all is the first one.

I got a B+, the only time in my grade-school and high-school career that I didn’t get an A+ in art.″

Trapped in the Mirror Room

July 11, 2009

It was Gabe Knox’s birthday party on Thursday night. He invited a few people over and we drank alcohol and bbqed Lick’s Beef and Nature Burgers.

We took a day trip to Buffalo NY the next day to the Albright Knox gallery. Gabe’s family owns the gallery.

I recorded this song with Burke Broadway. Video footage is all from my recent day trip to Buffalo.

Wonkavision – Just Like Heaven (1995)

July 9, 2009

I was going through some old reels today of recordings I made in the summer of 1995, and I found this old cover of the Cure – Just Like Heaven. Nick Bechard played acoustic guitar, Ian Clary played bass, and I sang and played the lead guitar parts.

We recorded onto the 2-track reel to reel pictured above, through the Traynor head and Peavey cabinet I play bass through in the Bang Bangs.

The most significant thing about this track is the novelty of it being Nick and I playing together 14 years ago in June 1995, but hey, it’s free entertainment!

Here we are in Nick’s backyard. Ian’s friend Rachelle took the pictures. Check out the holes in the bottom of Nick’s shoes! Nick used to be famous for those holes in his shoes (and socks).

The fourth guy in the bottom picture is Randy Hillman, the first of 5 drummers we had play in Wonkavision over the following year and a half.

As an extra bonus, here’s Wonkavision’s hit song from our tape $3 Basement Party, Chicken Pop inspired by Loeb Cola.

Rape of The Thanksgiving Turkey

July 7, 2009

I recorded this song on Sunday, I call it Rape of the Thanksgiving Turkey. I played all the bass and guitar parts, the audio is of (insert name here) stuffing a turkey at Cheryl’s house last Thanksgiving with background comments by Nick Bechard, Brayden, (insert name here) and Cheryl.

Adrienne and I went to see Valentino: The Last Emperor last night at the Isabel Bader theatre. It’s more about the relationship between Valentino and his collaborator/husband of 50 years, Giancarlo Giammetti, than his dresses. Definitely worth seeing.

Ted, the keyboard player and maestro in the Bang-Bangs moved last week and I helped him move a few boxes. He is a big-time archivist/collector like me, so he gave me some his stuff he had extras of that he couldn’t keep like these old Terminal Rage posters from 1986. Ted played bass in Terminal Rage, and Daniel from Eyesore Cinema (ex-Suspect Video) was the singer. I have a video of Daniel singing Ace of Spades with Stacey Case from the Trash Palace here.

Ted also gave me a bunch of issues of Interview Magazine from 1982 when Andy Warhol was still the publisher, and newsprint issues of VICE from 1995-97, back when everyone wore fat-pants and Snug was king!

I’m going to be helping Beckles do more TV Carnage stuff, this is my first demo I’m submitting for him to have me guest curate!

4th of July 4 track Recording

July 4, 2009

I’m pretty excited about working in wordpress now.

I can post songs! I just recorded this song on my iphone 4 track for Adrienne.
She’s going to use it as the score for one of her youtube videos. I call it Adrienne’s Song.

The Bang Bangs played with the Job at Graffiti’s last night. It was super fun! I think we’re going to play more shows with the Job.
