Teenage Dream

I really like this new Katy Perry song and video, Teenage Dream. It’s my favorite song of the summer.

Maybe I’m crazy, but knowing Ms Perry is from an Evangelical Christian background similar to what I was raised in, I imagine the lyrics being sung from the perspective of one of the kids in the movie Footloose. As a whole the lyrics are really sexually positive. Very love and life affirming, in direct contrast to Christian hate groups like Focus On the Family.

Before you met me, I wasn’t right
But things were kinda heavy, you brought me to life
Now every February, you’ll be my Valentine.

Lets go all the way tonight
No regrets
Just Love
We can dance until we die
You and I
Will be young forever

You make me
Feel like I’m living a Teenage Dream
The way you turn me on
I can’t sleep
Lets run away
And don’t ever look back

As an example of what I’m referring to, below is some of the sex-ed my parents presented me with when I was a pre-teen; lies from a serial killing rapist in his last interview hours before he was executed. The message repeatedly hammered into me at home was that if I was gay, looked at porn, masturbated, had lustful thoughts, or had sex before I was married, there’s a good chance this might be me in the future:

Somehow, I think the kids will be better off listening to Katy.

I remember being shown this video (Bundy & Dobson) at Sanctuary and being told this was the end result of pornography. Of course, now I look back and think to myself, “I bet 100% of then men who committed horrible crimes also probably had Mexican food at sometime in their lives. Hell, 100% of men who commit horrible crimes may LOVE mexican food! OMG, MEXICAN FOOD CAUSES YOU TO RAPE PEOPLE!”
