November 30, 2010

Roy Vucino and Mark Sultan are here today at 159 Manning recording in the basement with Nyles.

Yesterday Allison and Lauren Knight delivered my portrait they drew. I can’t believe how amazing it is. I want this picture displayed next to my casket when I die in 2078. They came by the studio again today to hang out with Nyles and I and watch Mark and Roy record.

My Feral Cell bandmate Kate Boothman is playing at the Dakota tonight!

Her main band Sunbear has been getting some great press lately. In just the last few days Sunbear got a great review from Ben Rayner in the Toronto Star, and were included on a 5 song mix-tape on BlogTO, featuring Feist, the Guest Bedroom, Ostrich Tuning, and Steven McKay. I took this picture of Kate performing solo at the Mod Club on Friday.

I want more Feral Cell!

Chief Salvage Co Opening Party

November 28, 2010

I did sound and provided a PA for the Chief Salvage Opening party the other night. Great party/great store!

Studio Update

November 24, 2010

The basement is currently in it’s single most organized state that it’s been in since I’ve lived at 159 Manning (it’s been 6 years!). We’ve come a long way since insulating the ceiling 3 months ago.

Nyles recorded some new songs yesterday. This one is called “New Pants”

You can download his new 4 songs ep “But I Want To Go To The Party” by clicking here.

159 Manning Sacred Harp Choir – Dec 4th

November 19, 2010

Below is a recording of Idumea (#47 in the Sacred Harp Songbook) from the Cold Mountain Soundtrack. It’s one of the songs we’ll be singing at Function13 on Dec 4th.

I bought my own copy of the Sacred Harp songbook from the Singing at Bloor Street United Church last Wednesday. They hold singings the third Wednesday of every month.

I am hosting singings in the living room/dining room of 159 Manning every Wednesday 7pm to 9pm from now until the new year, except for Dec 15th, when we’ll be at Bloor Street United from 7:30 to 9:30. All are welcome.

In My Room

November 8, 2010

I’ve ordered the score for Music For 18 Musicians from and it’s already shipped! Hopefully it’ll arrive this week. The 159 Manning Sacred Harp Choir has a gig at Function 13 in Kensington Market on Dec 4th (and possibly Dec 10th).

I had a jam with Jon Schouten and Jeremy on Friday night, it was the first time Jeremy had played drums with anyone in 6 years! We’re going to jam again this week.

I’ve reorganized my bedroom, removed a desk I built 5 years ago and brought in my drafting table. I’m going to paint the room white next week, and begin spending at least 10 minutes a day drawing.

The back wall of the bedroom will still be filled with records and books, but the rest of the room will be as empty as possible. Between my office, the recording studio in the basement, the living room, the dining room/library and toolshed, I have other places to keep everything. My bedroom will soon be my oasis retreat from the sensory overload that is 159 Manning.

I bought a Ganesh statue for $10 this morning. Jess Way talked the guy down from $12.99 to $10 since the statue is broken.

I’ve been working on an article for theWA magazine about my experience over the past few years with Dexedrine aka “Smith Klein and French E19″. Almost done!

Gabe and Tim in Coversation

November 5, 2010

I’m thinking of pre-selling tickets. Thoughts anyone?

I went to the AGO with Nick Bechard last night to see Wasteland, a new documentary about artist Vik Muniz going down to a giant garbage dump in Brazil to make portraits of some of the recyclable materials pickers with garbage from the dump. I’ve pondered the thought of garbage dump mining many times over the years so I liked seeing reality in action.
