9 Pictures From Tuesday Night

February 28, 2014

I played a few songs on the turntables at the big NXNE announcement party thingie on Tuesday! Here’s 9 photos I took with my 5D Mark II.

Justin was the first DJ of the night. Hi Justin!

*muah* *muah* *muah*

Oh Justin, you’re soooo funnyyyyy and sexy!!

Suuuup Coral?

Chris looks like he’s wasted here, but he’s just blinking. It was the beginning of the night. I figured it’s still okay to post it because Coral and Cheryl both look hot and only girls complain about the way they look in pictures.

Mar: “Tim don’t take my picture.” Ivy: “..and then I was like pfft it’s so small I can barely see it! ROFLOL!!”

Let’s ignore Tim and maybe he’ll stop taking pictures of us.

Dude, I can’t see anything with your flash blasting in my face.

Crispin told me I looked like a crazy person (duh!) but based on the 8 song set I DJed that night, I got another gig DJing before the Toronto premier of the Goldfrapp documentary at Hotdocs on Wednesday March 26th!!! Buy tickets here! COME!

Music Sounds Better With You

Soft Hell are playing Bike Polo Toronto’s Very Special Party this Saturday! The theme is Bicycle Circus Party, so we took this promo photo for it after practice today. UPDATE FRIDAY FEB 28th 2014 – SOFT HELL CAN’T PLAY ANYMORE. TOMORROW’s SHOW IS CANCELLED

Doors are at 10pm, we go on at midnight and it’s only $5 to get in. We’re the only band playing, but there’s a DJ, and there’s bicycle mounted archery, and I think there might be some circus performers? Not 100% sure but I know it’s going to be crazy and weird, so I fully endorse this event!!

I played a solo piano set at Holy Oak on Friday night, I think it went pretty well, but I think it needs the most work out of all my other musical endeavors. Which isn’t so bad, since all the other musical endeavors I’m involved with are FUCKING AWESOME!!. Matt Cowley took this picture of me during my set.

Sunday afternoon I went to a shape note singing at Frank Griggs apartment. He lives in the same building Glenn Gould used to live in. We sang from the Northern Harmony songbook, which is a change from the Sacred Harp songbook we usually sing from at the monthly sings at Bloor Street United Church.

It was a bit more difficult to sing from this songbook because it seemed like the group was generally less familiar with the material compared to the Sacred Harp, but a good time was had by all!

Other than that I’ve just been painting and doing a few other odd jobs.

That’s all I’ve got for now.

This and That

Thursday’s karaoke band debut was a huge success! People were eating it up and we made it through our 3 hour set like a bunch of pros! Check out this hot n sexy picture of me that Ryan Laflamme took of me playing keys that night.

I was host/MC and played keys and rhythm guitar, with Fraser McEvoy on drums, Jesse Bellon on lead guitar, and Craig Mailman on bass. There were about 75 people in attendance that night, but EVERYONE in the room was having a good time, people came near the beginning and stayed til the end and I feel like the band has a really good dynamic playing together. I’m excited for us to do more shows. Here’s our set-list from Thursday night:

Our next show is on Thursday March 13th at Parts & Labour, and we’ll be doing a Smiths and Misfits cover-band on Sunday March 30th at P&L for Scott Wade’s birthday. I sing a mean Danzig AND Morrissey impression so this is basically a dream come true for me…but then playing with these guys in general is a dream come true for me. Between this karaoke band, playing drums in Soft Hell and singing in C!C!C!, it feels like my musical aspirations are finally bearing some fruit. Took fucking long enough.

I’ll be doing a solo piano/vocal set, similar to what I did on NYE, at Holy Oak this next Friday Feb 21st at midnight, after a set by Halls Of Devotion. It’s meant to be a sing-a-long type of thing, sort of a cross between karaoke and Choir!Choir!Choir!.

The following Tuesday I’ll be DJing for an hour at this NXNE party. I like that my address is my claim to fame. Emperor-Wizard-Hermit-Pope of the 159 Manning Temple Lodge of The Unholy Crimson Ghost 4 lyfe motherfuckazzzz!!

Motion and Still asked me to submit a photography portfolio today along with 1 video I’ve shot. I’m not sure what the gig, or who client is, so I stuck to images from my everyday life over the past couple of years. It’s honest.

Live Karaoke + 159 Manning 2014 x2

February 6, 2014

I recorded a piano version of Genuwine’s song Pony the other day. If it’s not already obvious, I’m not aspiring to be “rich” or “famous” with my music, I’m just aspiring towards being “good” and “talented”. I will keep at it and mayyyyybeeee sommmmmeedayyyyyyy other people will enjoy the stuff I do. In the meantime I will bask in my mediocrity, FTW!!

I was actually talking to someone about that earlier this week, how drawing was my more natural talent when I was a kid. I was always the best or one of the best drawers in my class/school growing up, but I sort of lost interest around 15 or 16 because even though I was good compared to my classmates, I felt like I wasn’t getting any better no matter how much time I put into it. I’d look at my favorite illustrators and think “I’m never going to be as good as them so why bother?”. With music I don’t compare myself to anyone else. I am trying and putting an honest effort into it, and want to be better than I am, but I’m not afraid of sucking or being better or worse than anyone else. I just like doing it. Me yesterday is my only competition.

There’s only 1 week before my 5-piece live karaoke band Good Enough make our public debut at P&L!! We’re all excited.

We’ve got a lot of requests lined up, but here’s a bunch of the unclaimed songs we’ll be ready to play on Thursday:
