R.I.P. Vassil

April 3, 2015

I’ve cried 4 times in the past 12 hours thinking about Vassil. I’m glad I’ve got this picture of him with his gold low-rider bike in front of 159 Manning 2 years ago. He kept showing up at the house over the past 7 or 8 years because he was often friends with one of my roommates, whoever happened to be living with me at the time, and we’d see each other at shows. He was always good vibes. Through so many ups and downs I’ve had, he always seemed genuinely relaxed and happy to see me. I’ve thrown less than 20 major parties here in the past 10 years, but I think he attended at least half of them playing in one of his bands like City Sweethearts, Rad Habits, Fill Spectre, or just hanging out. He’s been a welcome part of what’s happened at 159 Manning since I moved in just over a decade ago. We had a lot of common interests and people in our lives. The day this picture was taken he was here with me (not one of my roommates), before a Fill Spectre rehearsal.

A couple of weeks ago I got stupid drunk at Red Light on the Sunday night before St Patrick’s day doing too many shots with Julian, and a Thin Lizzy song came on and in my drunken ecstatic state I felt the need to tell facebook how much I loved them, and I told Vassil I was proud that we’d played together. I woke up the next morning feeling like an idiot for posting online while I was obliterated…and you know what? I still feel like an idiot, but I’m glad I told him I was proud I played with him, because I am. That’s the last interaction I got to have with him. He was a universally well-liked person. I’ve never heard anyone say a bad word against Vassil. He’s a person I’ll miss having in my life.
